Survey Responses

This was a yes/no survey with the option of adding further comments.

  1. Do you support the right of faith-based schools and organisations to only hire people who share their ethos?
No. We do not support the right for faith-based schools to discriminate in their employment on the basis of sexuality, gender identity or relationship status. The Tasmanian Anti-Discrimination Act has prohibited such discrimination since 1998. This has not impaired the operation of faith-based schools. What is has done is protect students from mistreatment, and ensured teachers are selected on the basis of competency, not irrelevant factors such as the gender of their partner.

  2. Do you support the push to ban ‘conversion therapy’ (including prayer and faith-based counselling) for people who are struggling with their gender or sexual orientation?
People who are struggling with negative attitudes towards their sexuality or gender identity need professional support, not the quack pseudo-science that underpins conversion practices. As other states have shown, banning conversion practices will not ban prayer or faith-based counselling. Only practices that are conversion practices, that is which seek to eradicate, change or suppress sexuality or gender identity, will comes within the scope of the law.

  3. Do you support banning biological males from competing in women’s sport?
No. The Greens do not support discrimination against transgender people, in sport or any other aspect of life. The Tasmanian Anti-Discrimination Act has strong protections against discrimination in sport. These protections have not caused any problems that we are aware of. What they have done is ensure all Tasmanians have equal opportunity to participate in sport. Many Tasmanian community sport organisations, including the Glenorchy Basketball Association and Soccer Tasmanian, recognise community sport is about participation and do not discriminate. Many elite sporting codes approach the issue of transgender athletes on a case-by-case basis.

  4. Would you support the formation of a parliamentary committee to ensure the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry into Child Sex Abuse are properly implemented?
    Yes.

  5. Do you support banning late-term abortions (when a baby’s life is viable outside the womb), except where the mother’s life is at risk?
No. The Greens support the rights of women to control their own bodies.

  6. Do you support compulsory pre-commitment cards for poker machine users?
    Yes.

  7. Do you support ongoing state funding of Dark Mofo?
    Yes.

  8. Do you support the decriminalisation of recreational drugs?
    Yes.
