Survey Responses

This was a yes/no survey with the option of adding further comments.

  1. Do you support the right of faith-based schools and organisations to only hire people who share their ethos?
No. No school or organisation should be able to discriminate on the basis of gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, or marital status. Schools should be hiring the best people for the job, not hiring based on faith. And students and school communities should reflect the makeup of our communities, which includes people of diverse genders, sexual orientations and marital status.

  2. Do you support the push to ban ‘conversion therapy’ (including prayer and faith-based counselling) for people who are struggling with their gender or sexual orientation?
Yes. Conversion therapy is based on the false premise that people of diverse genders and sexual orientations are ‘broken’ and need ‘fixing’. This is not true. Rather than causing harm and even death by telling people they are broken, and subjecting them to discredited and unethical practices, we should be affirming them and supporting them to thrive. The God I grew up with loves everyone equally and does not believe anyone is ‘broken.’

  3. Do you support banning biological males from competing in women’s sport?
No. Trans women have been competing in sports for a very long time, with no issue until it has been blown up by mischief makers. Many codes have or had processes in place to ensure that competition is fair, and safe at all levels of competition. These processes were developed in conjunction with all relevant stakeholders and in my view this is the approach that should continue.

  4. Would you support the formation of a parliamentary committee to ensure the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry into Child Sex Abuse are properly implemented?
Yes. The previous parliament had a committee overseeing the implementation of the Commission of Inquiry and I support the continuation of its work.

  5. Do you support banning late-term abortions (when a baby’s life is viable outside the womb), except where the mother’s life is at risk?
No. The decision to have a termination is one that should only ever be taken by the mother and her clinician/s. It is not something lawmakers should have any say in.

  6. Do you support compulsory pre-commitment cards for poker machine users?
Yes. Poker machines cause immeasurable harms in our communities and the single most effective thing that can be done to minimise that harm is to ensure that people have to set a limit on how much they are willing to lose, and not be permitted to exceed that amount. Other measures that would also help reduce hard is slower spin speeds, removing losses disguised as wins, and shorter venue opening hours.

  7. Do you support ongoing state funding of Dark Mofo?
Yes. State funding of the arts is an important way to support cultural and other activities in Tasmania that bring a wealth of community benefits, especially in the winter months in Tasmania.

  8. Do you support the decriminalisation of recreational drugs?
Yes. Drug use is a health, not a criminal issue. It’s well known that legal drugs such as alcohol and tobacco cause enormous social and economic costs. In jurisdictions that have decriminalised recreational drugs there’s no evidence that it causes more harm and in fact the evidence suggests that harms such as overdoses and criminal offences are reduced.
