Survey Responses

This was a yes/no survey with the option of adding further comments.

  1. Do you support the right of faith-based schools and organisations to only hire people who share their ethos?
No. Diversity is a fact of life. Education should not be given from a place of an individual or groups chosen perspective or beliefs. Education, no matter the institution, should come from a place of neutrality so as to give those who are learning the autonomy to accept all aspects of the world they live in and make choices and decisions based on a complete and all encompassing education. The ethos of faith-based schools and organisations I welcome to be taught in all schools but should not be the only ethos taught. Well educated and informed humans build better worlds and it is the job of schools to produce well educated and informed humans.

  2. Do you support the push to ban ‘conversion therapy’ (including prayer and faith-based counselling) for people who are struggling with their gender or sexual orientation?
Yes. Conversion Therapy implies there is a ‘right’ way for all humans to be converted to. If all humans were the same the world wouldn’t look and be the way it is. Therapy and counselling as a practice is about helping individuals understand themselves, from education about the complexities of being a human, to the expansion of knowledge about who one is in the present and the myriad of possibilities one can become. I don’t believe there is one ‘right’ version of humans, merely an array of beautiful and interesting humans who deserve understanding, compassion, safety, and love.

  3. Do you support banning biological males from competing in women’s sport?
Yes. This topic makes me deeply uncomfortable. Morally I am against anyone being disadvantaged or discriminated against. I am a straight, white, privileged, male, who works hard on his physical strength and capability. There are many people stronger and more capable than me for me to compete against, therefore I choose not to compete against those I know I have a genetic or physical advantage over. But my beliefs will never be forced on another by me. I have not the understanding, experiences, or education to judge any person outside of myself but I do have the capacity for kindness and compassion for every individual I meet, no matter who they are or how they wish to move through the world. I fight for the freedom of every individual and their right to safety and happiness. I believe the current structure of gender based competition as an industry needs to be realigned and reimagined. As human understanding changes, so must the world built on an outdated understanding. I don’t agree with competition where there is advantage given to any competitor that cannot be given to all competitors, and biology in some cases, sadly can be such an advantage.

  4. Would you support the formation of a parliamentary committee to ensure the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry into Child Sex Abuse are properly implemented?
Yes. Without question I support the safety and protection of children. If a parliamentary committee is the best course of action to see children are best protected based on the information that has been gathered, then I wish to be on said committee.

  5. Do you support banning late-term abortions (when a baby’s life is viable outside the womb), except where the mother’s life is at risk?
No. Overpopulation is a global fact, as is every humans right to freedom and choice. We have developed modern medicine and science to improve our lives and the choice to access and utilise that medicine and science is a factor in our freedom.

  6. Do you support compulsory pre-commitment cards for poker machine users?
Yes. I’ve known addiction internally and witnessed it externally. External support is imperative to helping people suffering addiction.

  7. Do you support ongoing state funding of Dark Mofo?
Yes. Art is how we process the world whether we are conscious of it or not. Devaluing what little art our government funds is detrimental to the people of our society.

  8. Do you support the decriminalisation of recreational drugs?
Yes. Poor mental health without the access to sufficient healthcare, education or support often leads to self-medication which can come in the form of both legal and illegal drugs. Education, support, kindness, and understanding will combat drug use far more effectively than making everyone a criminal. Enforcing laws that inherently strike fear of prosecution without presenting an alternative option or situational understanding, ultimately disadvantages those who rely on and trust the society and government that is in place to include and guide them. Survival is a basic human instinct, If crime is the only option one can see to survive then the system isn’t working.
